About Principles and Perspectives in Interventional Cardiology - State of the Art Overview This symposium on Principles and Perspectives in Interventional Cardiology will focus on the pivotal issues confronting the practicing Interventional Cardiologist with an emphasis on case presentation and practical solutions to complications and difficult patient, lesion and clinical subsets.
Intended Audience The symposium is designated for interventional as well as non-invasive cardiologists, cardiovascular and vascular surgeons, laboratory technicians and allied health-care professionals.
Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
- Assess the impact and implications of late breaking trials on current interventional practice.
- Evaluate the development of new technology — bioabsorbable stents and materials, vulnerable plaque and vulnerable patient identification, OCT, MRA and CTA for evaluation of heart disease, new percutaneous therapy for valvular disease.
- Review new stent trials, new stent platforms, new polymers, new drugs.
- Demonstrate the use of drug eluting stents in acute myocardial infarction, implications of MVD in AMI, and the use of thrombectomy in AMI.
- Evaluate carotid, renal & peripheral intervention, patient selection, technical considerations, and status of current trials.
- Discuss percutaneous PFO, ASD, VSD and PDA closure, patient selection and technical tips; percutaneous aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair; LA appendage ablation for atrial fibrillation.
- Define technically-difficult & high-risk subsets: left main, bifurcation, small vessel, and diffuse disease, extreme tortuosity, degenerated SVG.
- Appraise serious complications — how to avoid them, how to treat them.
- Define the role of adjunctive pharmacology: use of thienopyridines, GP IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists.
- Discuss interventional dilemmas/controversial cases of the day: instructive, unique and interesting cases by faculty members concentrating on procedural strategy and solutions to complications.
- Understand practical techniques relating to carotid stenting, transseptal puncture, radial artery approach, and peripheral intervention by attending afternoon workshops.
